Naked For a Cause

Perth photographer Tim Pokorny has made it his new year’s resolution to get out from behind the camera, and to get out from behind it in the biggest bravest way…like EVER!  If 52 people donate $10 to the RSPCA, for the grand total of $520 in donated funds Tim will face his greatest fear and has pledged to not only pose for a photo, he’ll do it in the nude! Tasteful nude mind you! Not only is he brave, but he’s helping a charity to boot!

Full details of Tim’s proposal can be found on his Little Blue Frog blog.

You can donate a $10 share directly online via the RSPCA Australia website – just click here.  And don’t forget to email Tim at tpokorny@gmail.com to let him know he is $10 closer to Nude Day. He’s already at $400!

Noah’s Ark Natural Animal Sanctuary, Malaysia

Last week I had the pleasure of dining with a fabulous international animal welfare pioneer – Mr Raymund Wee of Noahs Ark Natural Animal Shelter (NANAS) in Malaysia. Raymund has dedicated the last ten years (and then some) to providing care, shelter, and a permanent home to thousands of unwanted and neglected animals. He saves them from unnecessary euthanasia, believing that every animal has the right to a happy and healthy life – and not one cut short simply because they become an unwanted commodity.

Raymund also funds and operates Malaysia’s only mobile spay vehicle, providing free and low cost animal spay and neuter services. The spay shuttle reaches all corners of Malaysia and Raymund’s work is varied – one day he spays stray cats at local markets, and the next he travels to remote jungle areas  where he educates tribes-people in pet management.

NANAS moved from Singapore to Malaysia in 2000, and sits atop 10 hectares of land. There are over a dozen permanent staff and many volunteers who assist with the daily running of the centre, and the care of 840+ dogs, 500+ cats, horses, monkeys, snakes and small mammals, all of whom have found themselves a  permanent home in which to live out the rest of their days. With a food bill alone totalling $20,000 Australian dollars a month, Raymund works tirelessly to promote the centre and bring in donations.

His 840+ dogs form natural packs and all free-range together within the compound to create one large group. It must be quite a sight to see Raymund as ‘leader of the pack’ taking his 840+ dogs for a walk on the expansive NANAS property. And fortunately, it’s a sight I’ll get to see when I visit there later this year with the Houndstooth Studio crew, as we’ve been invited to NANAS to photograph the residents. We can’t wait to meet the animals, and see Raymund in his element, where he is “Daddy” and protector to his charges.

In the meantime, Houndstooth Studio will be providing Raymund with stock images to use for the NANAS Spay Shuttle marketing program, and NANAS will be the next animal charity recipient for our May – July special pet photography offer.

Raymund presented a lovely framed letter of thanks to the studio – and we in turn thank him for his dedicated work in making the lives of Malaysia’s animals more comfortable. He really is an exceptional ambassador for the animal welfare cause, and is one hundred percent the ‘real deal’.

Many thanks also to my good friend Dr Eric Yeoh  for connecting me with Raymund.

National Trust Magazine – Published Images

This year the National Trust is celebrating bio-diversity throughout Australia. As part of an ongoing commercial agreement with the National Trust in WA, I provided a selection of my wildlife images depicting the bird and crab life found on Christmas Island, in the Indian Ocean Territories, Australia. The images accompanied an article compiled by Linda Cash, Marketing Manager for the Christmas Island Tourist Centre. Linda wrote about the island’s unique flora and fauna, and the article featured in the February 2010 edition of Trust News, Australia, the National Trust’s monthly magazine for members.

According to feedback from the trust, the article was well received and hopefully it will encourage National Trust members to visit Christmas Island for themselves, to witness the beauty and wonder it has to offer. The magazine has a readership of over 80,000 people, so was great exposure for the island!

Here’s a copy of the finished product.

Jack the Cavoodle

This is Jack, a 13 week old cavoodle (cavalier king charles cross poodle) who visited the studio for a Friday night photo session. I really enjoy it when puppies come to the studio. Being so young they often don’t fully grasp what’s going on and as a result their images always have an purity and innocence to them.  Add to this a lovable charm, an adventurous nature and a curious expression and you get the perfect puppy pic.

Jack is adorable, no?!

Chicks and Ducklings

Last weekend I took the studio off-site for a photo session at the U Can Hatch Us business premises. U Can Hatch Us  commissioned a series of images for use on their website and marketing material.

As a family owned and operated business, U Can Hatch Us provide complete all- inclusive chicken and duck hatching programmes to individuals, groups, and schools.  Their amazing displays enable the chickens and ducklings  progress to be  monitored from an egg to a scratching, feeding, drinking, ball of feathers. When the 12 day hatching and growth cycle is complete, U Can Hatch Us repatriate all chicks and ducklings to reputable homes.

Spending the day capturing images of two day old chickens and three day old ducklings was so much fun and I had frequent “I have THE BEST job” moments, especially when holding the little participants between shots.  They were so adorable and vulnerable and tiny!

Here is a sneak peek of the images. Thanks to Judy for her fabulous animal handling.
