LOVE FOR BALI ANIMALS!

Join me and Bali Animal Welfare Association West Australia Inc. for BALI NIGHTS PERTH, and help raise funds for the Bali Animal Welfare Association.

Come along and share a drink, some delicious finger food, and bid on a silent auction item, while learning more about the wonderful work of BAWA and of the support provided to them by BAWA WA.

Many of us have travelled to Bali and have seen the state of the animals who live there. Feelings of helplessness and despair come from witnessing such sad suffering, and it can be hard to know how to seek assistance when dealing with a sick or injured animal on foreign shores. On a positive note, help is available … thanks to BAWA.

The BAWA team will respond to alerts of any animal in distress, from snakes to dolphins. They are funded entirely by donations and rely heavily on a staff of dedicated volunteers.

BAWA works every day to save the lives of animals in Bali and to relieve their suffering. They provide emergency response and rescue, food and medication, rehabilitation and adoption to animals in need, and run intensive animal education and advocacy programs.

As a long term supporter of BAWA, I have worked first hand with street animals in Bali, and conducted the largest photography fundraising project featuring Bali’s remarkable street dogs and other animals.

I’m thrilled to host this inaugural event and to share a presentation on my experiences with BAWA.

THE CRINKLES!

This divine little gal was one of the stars of the 2017 Dogs’ Refuge Home of WA Christmas Card photo shoot we did earlier this week. What a doll! She’ll be up for adoption soon (keep an eye on the DRH FB page for her info and for Christmas card details), but in the meantime, check out her crinkles. LENS DUO!

When Andy from Blonde Robot & Tamron Australia was in Perth recently he personally delivered my new lenses – the Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 VC Gen2 lens and the Tamron 18-400mm f3.5 VC lens. How’s that for service!

The 18-400mm lens will be going onto our office camera which has a crop sensor, and will be given a road test on a range of different subjects. It’s looking like a fantastic compact and light travel lens with excellent zoom.

Meanwhile, the 24-70mm Gen2 is about to be unleashed from its box for the first time today, during a big project shoot. We are filming behind the scenes, so you’ll soon get to see it in action. This will then become my main go-to studio lens. I’ve used the original version for 4 years solid and taken over a million images with it. It’s a beauty of a lens and I can’t wait to get snapping with its predecessor.

Photo thanks to Geoff Temple.

NEW HORIZONS!

Last Wednesday Deb and I hosted our last Perth photography workshop. We ended on a high with 19 keen photographers and a day of perfect weather … and a few dozen delicious cruelty-free cakes. Bliss!

Our courses have run for the past 5 years and have been held in front of hundreds of attendees in Perth, Sydney, and Hobart – with one more pencilled in for Canberra in 2018. It will then be retired fully in its current form.

I thoroughly enjoy teaching and helping enthusiasts understand that photography can be easy. A real highlight is seeing the moment it clicks for people and this is something I want to continue to nurture.

We are now exploring three amazing new opportunities in photography education – watch this space. Thanks to all of our past course participants, sponsors Whiteman Park and Caversham Wildlife Park, and supporters. We are looking forward to announcing our plans soon.

Image: Taken with 70-200mm f2.8 VC Gen 2 Tamron Australia lens and converted to B&W.

JUDGE AND BE JUDGED!

Just helped select the winning photographs in the Perth National Photographic Competition’s Nature category with two esteemed colleagues Glen from Glen Moralee Photography and Wayne. Four weeks ago we selected the images accepted into the awards by scoring over 400 entries. Now we re-judged the best nature images on offer and chose the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and merit winners. Congrats to those who won! Selected and awarded Images can be viewed during the Royal Agricultural Society of Western Australia‘s Perth Royal Show, in the photography building.

On my own awards front, ‘Cat With Flower’ was awarded the FIAP Selectors Choice Ribbon in the South Devon Salon, with a top score of 15/15 from the three judges. Woohoo! Bear Apartment Six (our fundraising image captured for Free the Bears Fund) received an honourable mention in the Fine Art / Collage Category of the Px3 Paris Photography Prize competition, and Orangutan picked up an honourable mention in the Nature and Wildlife category of the MonoVisions International Black and White Photography Awards.

A good days work all ’round! 😀

NEW DIGS FOR RESCUE DOGS!

Last Friday the wonderful team at the Dogs’ Refuge Home of WA officially opened their three new kennel blocks.

DRH patron and Wheels and Dollbaby fashionista Melanie Greensmith, kindly completed the ribbon cutting honours, supported by her partner Mark McEntee of the Divinyls and a host of other special guests including Red Dog producer, Nelson Woss, and DRH trustee and author Jennifer Skiff.

Mel and Mark are huge dog lovers and have been loyal supporters of the DRH for the past decade. They generously find time in their super busy schedules to lend their voices, and to speak up for dogs in need. They are both superstars in every sense of the word!

The kennels have been carefully designed to ensure maximum stress reduction for their canine residents. Everything has been meticulously considered. They are roomy, with improved sleeping areas, highly effective ventilation, and in-floor hearing and cooling. There’s even a built in audio system playing calming music all day long.

The new digs have now created the best environment possible for dogs waiting for their forever homes, and this will allow pooches to put their best paws forward when meeting potential adopters.

Call in and check out the new kennel blocks. And maybe you’ll find a new furry family member too!
