Photographing Wildlife in Cambodia

EEKKKK! Been dying to share with you all – in just over 3 weeks I’m flying to Cambodia to photograph tigers, elephants, gibbons, bears (and many more) at the Wildlife Alliance sanctuary (https://www.facebook.com/WildlifeAlliance). My images will be used as part of a fundraising extravaganza held late in 2012 for Wildlife Alliance and Wildlife Asia – the latter encompasses Free the Bears, Australian Orang-utan Project, Silvery Gibbon Project, and the Asian Rhino Foundation. I’ll have up close and personal access to 1200 sanctuary animals and am so grateful to have been entrusted with the task of capturing them for such an important project.

Exhibition for the Bali Animal Welfare Association

Houndstooth Studio invites
you to

Look Twice – the animals of Bali as never seen before.

 One Night Only
Photographic Exhibition & Fundraiser

 6:30pm – 9:30pm Friday 8th June 2012

Tompkins on Swan, cnr Dunkley Ave &  Canning Hwy, Alfred Cove, Perth WA

The Look Twice exhibition showcases the animals of Bali as never seen before. These uplifting and poignantly beautiful images reveal their strength and spirit, and are a testament to the valuable work undertaken to save their lives.  You will fall in love with every one.

Just like our pets at home, Bali animals deserve to be loved, cared for and nourished. Yet thousands of street dogs, cats and other domestic animals in Bali endure starvation, disease and neglect. Left unattended these animals suffer enormously. Tourists in Bali can be overwhelmed by the distressing sight of animals in pain and often don’t know how to help.

The Bali Animal Welfare Association (BAWA) is dedicated to reducing the suffering of Bali’s street dogs and other animals by running a 24 hour animal ambulance rescue service, a mobile sterilisation clinic for population control and rabies eradication, a fully staffed veterinary clinic and rescue centre in Ubud, an animal adoption program, and a continually expanding range of community education programs to improve the health and welfare of Bali animals …but it is increasingly difficult for BAWA to continue this amazing work without the  desperately needed funds to support these operations. BAWA is funded entirely by individual donations, fundraising projects and the kind efforts of volunteers. They don’t receive government support and urgently need our help!

In January 2012 we flew to Bali and photographed more than 50 rescued street dogs, cats, puppies, kittens and other species including rabbits, piglets, ducks, lizards, turtles, snakes,  roosters, ducks and monkeys in temporarily constructed studios around Ubud. This is the first time Bali street animals have been photographed in the clarity of a studio environment and the results are deeply moving.

Sixty exhibited images will be available for purchase in two sizes and fabulous silent auction items, generously donated by compassionate businesses, are up for grabs.

We invite you to be a part of this special one-night-only exhibition. Together we can help BAWA change the lives of Bali animals.  100% of profits from “Look Twice” go to BAWA.

$10,000+ Raised

Earlier this month the Animal Aid Abroad (AAA) fundraising luncheon was held at the Pagoda Hotel, South Perth. AAA aims is to improve the living conditions and treatment of companion, working and farm animals around the world.  It was founded by WA’s very own Janet Thomas in 2007 and currently runs projects in India, Nepal and Egypt, the latter being home to a 24 hour vet clinic set up in conjunction with Animal Aid Egypt – one of the few clinics in the city.

We attended the lunch with 20 friends, all of whom were keen to support AAA and participate in the day fully – which they did by bidding on the auction items and winning two of the raffle baskets! The event featured a lovely table-buffet luncheon, live and silent auctions, raffles, prizes, merchandise and contests. MC Nicholas Duncan was masterful on the mike, and guest speaker Lorenzo Montesini was enthralling when he spoke about life in Egypt and how he came to be involved with AAA after rescuing a tiny kitten found on an Alexandria beach.

Houndstooth Studio sponsored the event by donating a studio pet photo session, a framed Blue Clams limited edition print, and several of our images printed on canvas or mounted on aluminium – courtesy of our generous suppliers who manufactured and printed them pro bono. Some of my online friends from the website Red Bubble also sent through photographs at their expense! Such awesome supporters of this worthy charity!

One of the more expensive items up for grabs was a painting by artist Lauren Wilhelm valued at $1500 and it was quickly snapped up at auction after a hotly contended bidding war!

It was also refreshing to see other animal charity groups supporting the event, with Bali Dog, SAVE, Cats Haven, and Free the Bears all in attendance!

AAA was hoping to raise $10,000 from the event – and they did, making just over their desired amount! So happy that they achieved their target as the funds will now be used to continue helping animals overseas, and to fund the vet clinic.

Many of the horses and donkeys in Egypt are working animals and are forced to continue pushing on regardless of pain from poor health. Just $4 buys a fly net to prevent fly strike.

Naked For a Cause

Perth photographer Tim Pokorny has made it his new year’s resolution to get out from behind the camera, and to get out from behind it in the biggest bravest way…like EVER!  If 52 people donate $10 to the RSPCA, for the grand total of $520 in donated funds Tim will face his greatest fear and has pledged to not only pose for a photo, he’ll do it in the nude! Tasteful nude mind you! Not only is he brave, but he’s helping a charity to boot!

Full details of Tim’s proposal can be found on his Little Blue Frog blog.

You can donate a $10 share directly online via the RSPCA Australia website – just click here.  And don’t forget to email Tim at tpokorny@gmail.com to let him know he is $10 closer to Nude Day. He’s already at $400!
