Cover shot and feature article in Photo Review Australia Magazine

I was recently approached by Steve Packer, writer extroadinaire with Photo Review Australia (PRA) Magazine, to be interviewed for a feature article in their September-November issue – Which is out now! PRA is a national magazine which profiles inspiring photographers, and is centred around beautiful and interesting images. And I was thirlled and surprised to be given the coveted cover spot! Squishy the rainbow lorikeet now graces the front of the magazine. So fantastic to see her on there in all her brightly coloured glory!

Inside the magazine you can read all about my animal photography beginnings, and how and why I do what I do. The article stretches over 7 pages and features a selection of my studio images too.

Photo Review Australia also have a detailed website on all things photography, which you can view here. http://www.photoreview.com.au/

Dog Duo’s (plus two cats)

As always, the studio has been a hive of activity over the past few weeks. Apologies for taking so long to upload our recent client pics! There are more to come in another post soon too.

Behind the scenes I’ve been working with our draftsman on the new design of the studio renovation, and arranging the contractors so that we can get started ASAP! So excited to be creating a bigger and better space for my clients to visit! It’s going to be beautiful when it’s done and I can’t wait for you all to see it!

We’ve had a rush of ‘dog duos” in lately, meaning two pooches from the same family coming in for photos together. Shoots with two dogs are lots of fun and there’s always great pooch energy flying around! Plus it’s always the best feeling to nail the shot of both dogs in the one pic!

Some of the fantastic four legged friends we photographed are: Charli and Monty, Bender and Bogan, Millie and Max, Benny and Bart, Ash and Mohini, Pooh and Ruby, and Molly and Tasha. Plus a trifecta in Fluke and his cat brothers George and Porridge. And not forgetting individual visitors Stan, Bella and Cindy.

Charli was a beautiful boxer gal, yet at just 14 months old she is a seasoned member of the All Breeds Dog Club and each weekend she struts her stuff in the show ring. Her brother Monty the Montenegro, a 9 year old griffon bruxellios was a total charmer, filled with awesome attitude! Such a smooth operator with the “ladiiiiies”, stealing the hearts of everyone he meets.

Bender and Bogan came to the studio with their mum’s, who happened to be sisters. Bender did some ball acrobatics for me, whilst Bogan had a downright fab time jumping on and off the couch! Bender’s gold coat looked amazing on our black backdrop, whist Bogan had such rich, orange coloured eyes!

Millie and Max, a standard poodle and bichon frise respectively, were elegant and graceful during their shoot! Millie had red painted nails and at one point wore some pearls. Gentleman Max settled for a bow tie. Such grace!

Benny and Bart are two much loved rescue dogs who both shone in front of the camera. Their laughing shot of them together can’t but make you smile and has many people asking what the joke was, haha!  What happens in the studio, stays in the studio… :)

Ash and Mohini, also much loved rescue dogs, were a delight to work with. I was told that Ash is wary of strangers and always growls, but we hit it off right away and were friends from the get-go.  Could have been the liver treats? Nah, I’m sure it’s my natural dog charm, haha ! Mohini had a beautiful white cross across her chest, which jumped out in her pics. She rocked out the head tilt in shot after shot!

I first met Pooh and Ruby at this year’s Million Paws Walk, and like Bender and Bogan, their mum’s are also sisters! They had their photos taken in the Houndstooth Studio pet photo booth  and came back for more! Pooh the collie was soooo pretty, with lovely lines and perfectly groomed fur. Ruby the leonberger was a gentle giant, and both dogs helped me capture some assigned shots  for the Nov/Dec issue of Dogs Life Magazine! Several clients have since told me that after seeing pics of Ruby they now want a leonberger! Can’t blame them! They are a magnificent breed. Deriving their name from Leonberg in Germany, according to legend the leonberger was bred as a symbolic dog, to mimic the lion in the town crest. They are related to St Bernard’s and Pyrenean Mountain dogs and have a beautiful nature. Ruby weighs in at 45 kilos (sorry Rubes!) and even has her own Facebook page!

Molly and Tasha, a lovely rottie and border collie pair, were well mannered during  their shoot – usually they aren’t fussed with each other, but they put their differences aside for their ‘together’ shot. I was devastated to hear that young Molly has a heart condition. She is such a lively and beautiful gal and I really wonder sometimes why our beloved pets have to have  to face such trials and tribulations. It’s just not fair. Thinking of you Mol!

Fluke , the 12 year old golden cocker spaniel with the best up-do hair ever, came to the studio with cats George (aged 16) and Porridge (aged 14). All three spent several months in quarantine earlier this year, after moving to Australia from South Africa. They had wonderful ‘plus ten in age” energy, and weren’t fussed by the goings-on in the studio. George and Porridge were almost too chilled as they just wanted to sleep and not be woken up constantly to have their photo taken. Fluke was a delight to work with and took some adorable shots.

The magnificent greyhound known as Stan visited us again – his first shoot with us was for a commercial client from Queensland  back in May. This time ’round, we were able to do some pics of him infront of the black backdrop and I could be more creative. He was beautiful as always, and is one of my fave dogs!

Bella came to the studio at just 12 weeks old. A tiny maltese shih tzu cross puppy, she was cute beyond words. I made the mistake of jumping my hand towards her and saying “Hand spider”…which of course was then the only thing she wanted to chew on and bite! I couldn’t stop laughing, trying to take a photo with one hand whilst she constantly attacked the ‘hand spider’.

And last but not least, we met graceful 14 year old greyhound Cindy. An ex-racer, Cindy was one of the  original 50 dogs re-homed by Greyhounds As Pets around 9 years ago. She was gentle old gal, who is battling on valiantly in her twilight years. Her mum told me every photo she has  of Cindy shows her looking “terrified”. So I was very happy to capture pics of her smiling and looking like the regal greyhound she is.

Here are some of our fave pics from the photo sessions.

Can a horse fit in a studio?

Yes! Just, haha! We were recently contracted by a commercial client to produce two studio shots of animals for PPE Queensland. They asked us to create an image of a grey greyhound and a grey horse to market their Euro number plate range . With enlisted the help of Greyhounds As Pets (GAP) in Perth  and they helped us  find the ‘best looking’ grey greyhound in WA – Four year old ex-racer, Stan.

Stan and his owner Emma came to our studio and Stan behaved beautifully in front of the camera. He was extremely patient and cooperative, and had such a chilled-out vibe. Emma was very kind and refused a cash payment, so we made a $250 donation to GAP on her behalf, and Emma requested it go the building of the kennels at Hakea Prison as part of GAP’s “Second Chance at Life” Prison Fostering Program. Plus, we offered Emma and Stan a free studio photo session and they are came back to see us last weekend. Here are some pics of Stan during his shoot, relaxing between takes (with pics form his second photo session coming soon).

True to our claim that we will photography any animal in a studio, we then set about finding a grey horse. The colour was proving to be an issue so we went to plan B and began looking for a chestnut instead. We found the perfect horse in BBD Class Act, also known as Puff, one of WA’s top dressage horses. In order to complete the horse photo session we hired a large studio space.  Our equine advisor, Liesa was on hand to oversee all safety aspects and to direct Puff. His owner Beatrix (a highly successful and accomplished rider in top level dressage) assisted as well, and Puff delivered the poses we needed in record time. I’ve included some shots of Puff during the breaks in his photo session, as well as his final advertisement too. You may notice a ‘slight’ colour change, heehee, which was completed by my clients’ creative team, in order to meet the ‘grey’ colour requirements of the brief.

Both advertisements are now live in print media and online at the PPQ website.

Wildlife Up Close

As Kanyana’s studio photography partner, I returned in early July with Susie and junior animal handler Erin, to take their next batch of wildlife pics. We photographed Pogo the bearded dragon, Precious the tawny frogmouth, two joeys still in their home-made pouches, a bettong and two green tree frogs.

Precious pulled out all of the poses you would expect from a tawny with a name like hers, and her eyes nearly popped out of her head when she saw a container of fruit sitting on the floor! It was the most beautiful thing she had evvvvvver seen and so wanted to eat it all. The frogs just wanted to be sleeping, so to get this point across they got all three of us with a spray of urine. They had the best aim! What could we do but laugh! At least they shared it ’round and didn’t just target one of us (though I think I was the first to get hit).  Ah, things like that are par for course in this profession.

Overall I think Pogo the bearded dragon stole the shoot - he was very well mannered (no sprays of wee, haha) and looked stunning against our white backdrop! And the chilled out little joey was a winner too! Such a cute guy, love his perfect kangaroo paws!

Dingo Pups – 3 weeks of age

As part of our ongoing photography commitment to the WA Dingo Association, Suzie (our native animal handler) and I returned to the home of Darren and Leigh to photograph their new family members -  Osirus, Isis, Jarrah & Baldr, their four little dingo pups! With Loxie (the best dingo mum ever) looking on, Suzie and I took a series of studio shots of the three week old bundles of fluff. Their eyes were open, but their vision hadn’t quite kicked in yet and as with adult dingoes, they were very fresh and clean – being native wolves they don’t have that ‘doggy’ smell that unwashed or damp pooches can sometimes get. They were also twice the size a dog puppy would be at the same age – part of their inbuilt evolution, being that only the strongest survive, so pups in the wild have to grow rapidly to be able to fend for themselves.

At the end of the photo session, I was presented with a lovely certificate of appreciation and bright beautiful bunch of flowers by Daz, the President of the WADA. Thanks so much Daz, Leigh and Barb (whose daughter made up the flower arrangement!) – I’m hard to surprise, but you certainly did just that, and the certificate will take pride of place in my studio.

Suzie, and I (accompanied by Erin) have since taken another set of studio pics showing the pups at 5 weeks of age. And we’ll be returning at fortnightly intervals to fully chronicle the changes in the pups over time, which is a first as far as we know!

I feel very privileged to not only document the pups’ growth but to get a fortnightly fix of dingo pup kisses and hugs. I’m always greeted by them running over and jumping around on my leather boots, chewing at the laces! So special to have access to them and to be trusted with them too!

Here are some of the three week old pup pics (and Loxie)! Plus you can read our earlier blog about the dingo day photo shoot here.

Two Zoo’s and a Penguin Centre

In early June I travelled to South Australia to visit the Victor Harbor Penguin Centre and take my second batch of little penguin pics for them.  Assisted by Erin and Debora, the penguin photo session was a great success – We even managed to get a few quick shots in “studio” style too!  The pics will be used by the centre on their website and marketing material, and will hopefully attribute to some additional funds.

The centre is operated  by volunteers, and is not for profit. It relies 100% on visitor entry fee’s and donations – so we thought it only fitting to part with a $200 donation to go towards vet care and food. Although the rescued penguins are in care, they are still wild animals. The highlight for me was attracting the attention of a little guy called Neil, by swirling around some leaves and grass. He bounded over to me, fascinated by the movements and sounds of the leaf/grass concoction, and was almost childlike in his wide eyed excitement at seeing something new. It was a touching moment to entertain such a precious bundle of blue, and probably something his parents would have done if he was still with them. You can read my earlier post about the plight of the little penguins here.

I also completed a studio session for Tilley the jack russell in Victor Harbor. She is a 12 month old ball of muscle and energy who lives to chase her ball again, and again, and again, and again, and … I think you get the idea! Don’t you just love her?!

Whilst in Adelaide, Erin and I couldn’t resist a quick visit to the Adelaide Zoo to check out the pandas Funi and Wang Wang. They were magnificent to see up close and worth the hype, but  I have to confess it was the four month old meerkats who stole the show for me! Mimicking their parents, they were too cute for words! 1000 photos later I tore myself away from them!

Erin, Debora and I also stopped in at Adelaide Zoo’s sister facility, Monarto Zoo, to spend a day with the keepers – my 7th visit behind the scenes there over the last few years. Originally an overflow space for the Adelaide Zoo’s larger animals who were off exhibit, Monarto is now a fully fledged zoo in its own right and is possibly the best zoo in the world (well, if not the best, it’s a tie with Singapore Zoo). It’s located an hour’s drive from Adelaide and all of the animals are free ranging in large paddocks or spacious state of the art enclosures.   The behind the scenes tours are hands on with the keepers, driving around the zoo in their utes and getting up close and personal to the chimps, cheetah, rhino, zebra, lions, giraffe, painted dogs, hyenas, and wallabies.  I learnt that you don’t feed a rhino with a flat hand the way you feed a horse!

One of my favourite animal interactions from this trip was Maureen  the wallaby jumping up onto my camera backpack – whilst it was still on my back! Another  magic moment was one of the hyenas taking a liking to my camera lens and planting a big lick on it, right after eating a huge chunk of stinky horse meat.

As much as the zoo has outstanding facilities and standards of care for its animal residents, the best part about it is the keepers. They are inspiring,  passionate and devoted, and I always miss them when I leave! (Hi Tash, Tony, Trav, Mark, Nikki, Emma).

Our 1st anniversary in North Perth

The 4th of July 2010 was our first anniversary operating from our North Perth fixed base studio. Although I have been photographing animals exclusively since 2006, the fixed base studio has really enabled me to consistently achieve a high standard for my clients.  I love working in the studio – it’s familiar and comfortable and always a happy place filled with cute  creatures of every variety. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting amazing people, and amazing animals, and captured some wonderful ‘one off’ moments.

I would like to extend a big thank you to all of the wonderful pet owners and pets who have visited  us during the last year, for your support. And a special thanks too for our loyal Facebook fans who have followed us along the way.

We have exciting times in store with the extension of our studio area commencing this month (it’s doubling in size!) and with some new national partnerships and media features soon  to be announced. Here’s to the next 12 months and beyond!

Studio Client Update

In between our 5 day trip to Adelaide, we have been working hard in the studio, and have met some adorable dogs recently. Here are some pics from our recent pooch photo sessions.

First up is 6 month old black lab puppy Louis. He was such a cute little guy with a big personality – and he went crazy for the liver treats!

Then we met Bondi, an adorable boxer gal. She drinks out of a sports water bottle, and bought her zebra soft toys along to the shoot! She had two ‘bling’ imported dog collars which were simply magnificent – and suited her to a tee.

Bruno the happy chocolate lab paid us a visit! He reminded me of Scooby Doo and had soooo much character!

It was the week for boxers, with Sophie, an 8 year old, having some portrait shots captured as well. The pics were a gift from her mum to her dad who is working overseas!

And last but not least is Chilli, the 13 year old long haired jack russell. Age doesn’t stop Chilli from doing anything, not even this well balanced move!

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No…it’s our new banner!

We recently produced a new banner, quoting Meredi, one of our happy Houndstooth Studio Clients! We think her words ring very true!

At Houndstooth Studio we pride ourselves in our knowledge of animals – their behaviours, nuances, and movements. This knowledge can only be acquired through the dedicated use of correct animal handling techniques, and a strong understanding of animals developed over a long period of time.  Studio lighting set-ups for animals, and the concept and execution of a pet photo session, differs entirely from the way a photographer approaches portrait photography for people. Our skills enable us to capture our subjects in the very best light (pardon the studio pun!).

So if you are in the market for stunning studio pet portraits captured by an expert, call Houndstooth Studio – Perth’s animal photography specialists.
