Why should I choose Houndstooth Studio?
Our photographer Alex Cearns is one of Australia’s leading animal photographers, having photographed animals exclusively for seven years. She doesn’t photograph weddings or landscapes – she is a dedicated animal photographer. This means she knows animals, and photographing over 1300 animals a year makes her an expert in the field.
Alex is the only pet photographer twice named Best Canine Photographer/Artist in Australia in the “Dog Owners Choice Awards” (2011 and 2013). In 2013 Houndstooth Studio was crowned the Australian Smart Business of the Year in the BOMA Smart Business Leadership Awards, the only photography business to ever receive this honour.
We provide a professional photography service in our custom-designed pet photo studio, based in North Perth. Our studio is a safe, fun space where your pet can be totally at ease. Think your pet it too boisterous or won’t sit still long enough to for a photo to be taken? Or is too shy, timid, or bites? Alex has a the skills to gain your pets’ confidence and maintain your pets’ attention and make their photo session an exciting event. Your pet will be rewarded with an array of treats and cuddles and you will be rewarded with character-filled portraits captured by an award-winning, experienced animal photography specialist.

Alex is a member of the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP). This means she has achieved the required standard to be classed as a professional photographer and adheres to the AIPP code of conduct relating to service, quality, and honesty in business and is trained, educated and skilled. The AIPP website explains;
- “Trained” because all Accredited professionals must have a minimum of 2 years experience with on the job training, or have completed a formal RTO approved photographic program before they can apply to become Accredited Members of the AIPP.
- “Educated” because all Accredited professionals need to continue to continue their professional development by taking part in the AIPP CPD program.
- “Skilled” because all Accredited professionals are encouraged to improve their skill through taking part in the AIPP awards programs, learning from their peers and increasing their craft and skill.
In the unlikely event you aren’t satisfied with your pet photo images, we will re-shoot the entire session for free.
What does a studio pet photo session involve?
Your studio pet photo session takes place in our purpose built pet photography studio, located in North Perth and takes approximately an hour.
We use studio lighting and professional camera equipment to capture character filled pet portraits. As your pet is familiar and comfortable with you, we may ask that you participate in your pet’s photography session.
This can include helping us to manoeuvre your pet into position, holding treats, and communicating with your pet. It’s always a lot of fun for everyone involved.
Feel free to bring along any of your pets favourite toys too and we can include them in some shots.
How long will my studio pet photo session take?
Each session takes approximately one hour for one or two pets. We work at a pace that suits your pet and can allow extra time for animals who may be shy or nervous.
Do I need to book?
Sure do. The studio is open by appointment only and we have a high demand for appointments – and sometimes a wait of several weeks. We ensure your booking is at a time and date suitable to you and our photo sessions are held at 11am, 1pm and 3pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
We hold emergency appointments outside of our regular photo session hours for young puppies, elderly pets, and pets with health issues, so please don’t hesitate to ask us about these should you require a ‘sooner rather than later’ photo session booking. There is a $75 charge for an emergency session.
We also photograph additional pets on request, for $75 per extra pet, and when booking we ensure we have enough time to capture the images we need.
How do I make a booking?
All you need to do to make a booking is contact us (click here to go to our online contact form) and we will reply with session information and available times and dates. Alternatively you can email our office at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 0413 174 069. Office hours are Monday to Friday 8:30am to 11am.
Once a time and date is agreed on we will forward you an online booking form. Simply complete this and return it to us within three business days, along with your session fee payment and you are all booked in.
Where is Houndstooth Studio located?
Our studio is located in North Perth at the bottom of our secret garden. There is ample parking on the street outside the premises. We will provide our address information once your booking is confirmed.
My pet can sometimes be difficult. How do you get my pet to co-operate?
Alex is considered one of the best pet and animal photographers in Australia and photographs over 1300 of them each year – a fantastic way to keep her skills current. She has been surrounded by animals her entire life and has a deep connection with them. She thinks its down to her energy and body language around them, but some of us at Houndstooth Studio think her connection is on a whole different level.
Alex also knows how to gain your pet’s full attention and trust and uses extensive animal handling expertise enables her to create beautiful images of the most difficult but beloved pet. She is very patient and has highly developed skills in anticipating your pets movements and expressions.
Alex is an expert in photographing in timid animals and sick and elderly pets too, knowing how to keep them relaxed and comfortable.
How long after my photo shoot can I view the images and what does the purchase appointment involve?
Within seven days of your studio pet photo session a sneak peek of images will be available on our Facebook page.
When your sneak peek is posted on Facebook we will contact you to let you know, and will also arrange a suitable time and date for you to attend your purchase appointment.
Your purchase appointment will take around an hour to view the images and make your purchase decision.
Photographs are the most precious visual possession we have, and we appreciate that you will want to make the right choices. These photographs will, after all, be in your home for many years to come. We use software designed to assist you in your decision making, and this allows you to ensure you choose your favourite images to be produced as prints or products.
Please consider such things as framing, where to hang the photographs and size of the images. This needs to be done prior to your purchase appointment.
One purchase appointment is allocated per client and this is your only buying opportunity.
We are unable to provide images on disc for you to take home and consider and all orders must be placed during the viewing session. With this in mind, please ensure all persons involved in the decision making process attend this session.
Please measure all potential wall spaces prior to your appointment to ensure that you are aware of the amount of space you have for possible products. We are unable to not allow any additional time outside of the viewing session for you to decide on images or products.
By considering what you might like before you visit us you can alleviate the stress of decision making and will be prepared to make your photo choices.
If a second viewing appointment is desired, there will be a fee of $150 per hour (min 1 hr).
We have three payment options available at your purchase session;
1) Payment in full
2) 50% paid on order and 50% paid on collection
3) Payment plan – 30%deposit is required, followed by regular payments of $50 per/ftnt minimum
How many prints do I have to buy and can I choose the sizes?
That’s entirely up to you! You choose the number of prints you would like to purchase and their sizes. We have a large range of deluxe framing and finishing options to choose from and are happy to assist you with your choices. You will also be able to view our display room, which showcases our stunning product range. Have you considered prints mounted on aluminum? They add a modern, sleek look to any home. Or how about a series of striking canvas prints, ready to hang. We also offer framed pieces, made by Perth’s finest craftsmen and available in a range of size combinations.
Do the products come with a guarantee?
Yes. Our prints and products have an archival life of 100 years and come with a life time guarantee. This guarantee covers workmanship, fading, and cracking.
How long do the products take to arrive once ordered?
After your order has been placed at your viewing session, your products will be custom made and ready within approximately 4 to 6 weeks.
